It’s white to most the lads out there and snow peak, pearl, uncle sam, vanilla, porcelain or alabaster to many ladies. Whatever you name it, using white in your home is the PERFECT option when you are looking to create an open, inviting space that feels fresh and clean.
White and light grey with white trim. My two all-time faves. Are ya with me?! When considering white or light grey for your walls, think about the space you are using it in. Not every room looks fantastic in white and not every room looks fantastic in light grey, but most rooms look great in one or the other.
If the room you are wanting to freshen up gets a lot of natural light, go with white. The light will bounce off it well and give your room a clean, fresh look (and who doesn’t love that?!).
There are rooms however that don’t fall into that category. These are ones that you have to turn the light on to read most times of the day, no matter the weather - I would try a light grey paint and keep the white for the trim. I know you have probably heard that a darker colours makes a room look smaller and this could have you shy away from colour at all. I’m not suggesting painting it black, just a light grey, or if you're really daring a light grey/blue. The main reason to go there at all is that even in an all white room, the shadows that are cast in a darker room will still make the white look quite dark.
I am all for taking every single trick in the book to try and make my house look clean without, you know… actually going through the motions of cleaning it. Painting your cupboards white might seem like a danger zone when you have 4 fun-loving foodies ( three small and a great big bearded one!) But when the quick wipe of a white cupboard looks 10 times better then the same wipe on a different color? I’ll take the easy route to the illusion of fresh cleanliness and paint my cupboards white. We’re actually gearing up to paint ours white sooner than later in this new abode, because we need to bring some balance to all this wood in our home ( in case you don't know us too well yet we purchased and moved into a timber frame last year. LOTS. OF. WOOD.)....it’s what first wooed me, but now it’s er….. a little much! Initially I was thinking of painting the lower cabinets/island a colour and the uppers white but it's a sealed deal now, white all the way. I wouldn't be as happy in the kitchen any other way!
What? No color allowed?
Yes it is! In fact, we highly encourage it. Using simple accent items of your favorite colour, you can create a story that you want to tell. Think a vase, a beautiful bowl, tea towels, photo frames or throw pillows. A cool idea here would be to start with one item that you love, perhaps it is a photo of your favorite place or a handcrafted tea set that you got on an overseas trip and then build your colours around that item. This also gives you a conversation starter, so make sure that you pick something that you love to chat about!

Make all your décor white. All of it. Nah, just kidding! An afternoon, a paint brush, some chalk paint in your favorite color (check out the ones that we have in stock online) and a décor item (or two) is all you need to spice things up! The fun part about this, is that when your favorite color changes, you get to do it all over again! If you are using a white (or light grey) backdrop for your room, it provides the versatility that you want to be able to update it as you see fit. If this is your jam, make sure you keep an eye our blog which will feature the joys of chalk paint later in the month. Ooooh and we have a killer sale on right now, but only white supplies last.
The window trim can become the best picture frame you could ever have, simply by painting it white. What better thing to frame then the beauty of the outdoors? The good thing is, even if your house overlooks a 5-highway interchange, painting your trim white is still a good idea. This is because painting your trim white will also allow for other bright patterns and colours in the room to take the focal point. No one will be looking at the interchange if they are looking at the sweet décor you just painted!
